How health insurance works

While a medical aid will pay for your medical costs or you can opt for public healthcare that is affordable you need to make provision for those expenses that continue while you are hospitalised.

Health insurance is an affordable insurance option that will pay out a lump sum when you are hospitalised for a pre-set number of days to help you pay for expenses outside of the hospital. When you take out a policy you will choose an option that determines how many days you need to be hospitalised and how big your pay-out is when you reach this number of days.

This pay-out will be cash and can be used for anything – to pay for groceries that were bought while you were hospitalised or even to cover medical expenses, but it is important to understand this this is not a medical aid and should not be seen as a substitute for medical scheme membership.
